The smoker is a beekeeping device that is used to produce smoke. The smoke calms the bees and makes it easier for the beekeeper to work on the colony. The smoker itself consists of a cylindrical combustion chamber and a bellows, which is needed to produce puffs of smoke.
The smoker was invented by the American Moses Quinby (1810 to 1875). In contrast, the equally well-known traditional beekeeper's pipe is operated with breathable air. The whistle is clamped between the beekeeper's teeth. This can damage the teeth. In addition, smoke often gets into the eyes and airways. Due to these disadvantages, the smoker is presumably enjoying growing popularity.
The smoke material used in the smoker is usually inexpensive fuel such as sawdust, straw, tansy, rotten wood or herbs such as lavender. The use of smoke allows the beekeeper to work on the bees in a relaxed and sting-free manner. The smoke is perceived as a threat by the bees and its perception causes them to prepare for an imminent escape from the hive. They quickly fill their honey bladder with supplies for the escape and are so busy that they are much less aware of the beekeeper's work.
The first oxalic acid preparation for vaporisation has now been approved in Germany. The medicine "Varroxal 0.71 g/g beehive powder" from the Swiss company Andermatt BioVet comes in powder form and will be available from 13 November 2023. It can be dripped, sprayed and also vaporised. Click here and get all information on the topic!
